Firsts

Curtis finally gets to taste something besides milk.

The lazy side of me just wanted to wait until we got back from WI.

I think he likes rice cereal!

Green beans and peas are another story.

Look who's sitting up on his own!

This started just a couple of days after we got back from Wisconsin.

Yay Curtis!!!

As of yesterday. . .

. . . this little guy is FIVE months old!
We had him in for a check-up a couple of weeks ago and at that point he was:
height:  27 inches (95th percentile)
weight:  15 pounds, 5 ounces (50th percentile)
head circumference: 17.25 inches (75th percentile)

He's all over the board as far as proportions go.  His weight percentile dropped in these past couple of months.  It's probably due to the fact that he spits up A LOT!  All of my kids were spitters, but I think he may take the lead.  I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that he spits up about half of what he takes in.  Good thing I'm nursing. . . or we'd be wasting a lot of formula (and money).  All of this spitting up has earned Curtis the nickname "Ralphie".  (As in, Curtis 'ralphs' a lot).  We  can thank Andy for that one.  Our pediatrician says that, as long as he is gaining weight and seems happy, we don't have much to worry about.  Curtis will also be starting cereal soon, so that should help.

On a happy note, Curtis is sleeping through the night!  I'd say he's become more consistent with it in the past few weeks.  He sometimes takes a little while to actually fall asleep, but once he's down (usually around 8ish) he'll be asleep until somewhere between 5:30/6:30am.  After I feed him, he'll continue to sleep until 8ish.

He rolls over both ways, though seems to roll to his tummy more often (and then gets stuck because he forgets that he can roll back).  He continues to be a happy, smiley little guy and so laidback.  He loves sitting in the exersaucer and sometimes in the Bumbo.

Now if I could just figure out how to get time to move a little more slowly, we'd be set.

After I took Curtis's teddy bear picture, I thought we'd try to get a good picture of the brothers.  I don't really have one.
And I still don't.

Exactly one year ago today. . .

. . . I found out that this precious life was growing inside of me.
Exactly four months ago today, I saw his sweet face for the first time.

How I adore this little boy.

8 years of marriage, 3 months of life

Two days ago, we celebrated our eighth anniversary.  (A sneaky little lady made her way into our photo). Some friends from church came to watch all three kids which allowed us to go out for a nice dinner. We talked, over coffee, about our eight years and all that we've been through together. It's been a great ride and we're looking forward to more of it!

On the same day as our anniversary, this young boy turned three months old!  He giggled at me for the first time today.  I just love being his mommy.
(Please try to ignore the fact that he just spit up all over himself.)

Check-up Time!

2 months old!!!
There was a newborn baby in the office at the same time as us today. I couldn't help but take a peek at the tiny thing. It really put into perspective how much Curtis has grown already. He now weighs 13 lbs. 2 oz. (75th percentile) and is 25 in. (95th percentile). Not a newborn anymore.

He did great when I woke him up from a nap by stripping him down to the diaper to get weighed. He was fine with the doctor poking and prodding him all over and even showed us a few grins. But when that nurse came with the shots - he screamed his little head off and turned shades of red that I'd never seen him in before. Poor baby. It broke my heart.

Shots aside, the check-up went great and we have a healthy little guy on our hands.

Bella's First Day of Preschool. . .

We enrolled Bella in preschool last fall. Initially, preschool wasn't something that was even on my radar. I never went. Plus, I'm a stay-at-home-mom. In my mind, preschool was for kids whose parents both worked.

But we had a pretty shy little girl on our hands who very rarely wanted to be separated from us. I had visions of dropping Bella off on her first day of kindergarten and her clinging to us in fear of this new and potentially scary experience. That's when we started to consider preschool. It would give her an opportunity to do something apart from us and to meet some friends that may carry over into her kindergarten class (I specifically looked for a preschool that would feed into our elementary school). On that October day last fall when we went to look at the preschool and meet the teacher, Bella was very quiet and had tears in her eyes. Later I learned that she thought I'd be leaving her there that day. In the months that followed, we talked up preschool as much as possible. Some days she felt brave and excited. Other days she cried and told me that she didn't want to go.During these past few months, however, I've noticed a big change in Bella. She's really started to come out of her shell. She's more talkative with others and more willing (and even wanting) to have a babysitter. Ever since July, she's been ready for school to start. It helped that we found out a church friend would be in her class.

Here she is in her classroom today - her very first day. This was the only photo that she'd allow me to take there. I left a happy little girl at preschool. One who was ready to venture out into this world (or at least a small part of it) on her own.

The only tears were mine.

It's the beginning of letting go.

Here are Bella's thoughts on her first day of preschool:

One month!

Can it really be one month already? It feels fast and yet it feels like he has been a part of our family forever. Curtis is a pretty happy baby and if he were my only child, I don't think he'd ever cry. He loves to be held and will lay content in my arms. I talk to him and sing to him and he just looks up at me. He smiled at me two days ago. I think there were a few half smiles in the days leading up to it, but this one was deliberate and directed at me. It lit up his whole face. And mine too.But there are times when he does cry. Times when he just wants to be in Mommy (or anyone's) arms but can't because I have to change Graydon's diaper or put him down for a nap, or just give him some attetion. That is hard. I feel so torn and don't want any of my kids to feel slighted. But when Curtis gets upset, he's pretty easy to calm down. It usually involves just picking him up and holding him. . .

. . . which I love to do. :)

Graydon's new skill. . .

is not one that I'm enjoying so much.
Graydon has learned the art of climbing.

If it was just on chairs like both of these photographs, it wouldn't be a big deal. But he is climbing on the toy box and coffee table. I caught him crawling across the back rest of the couch - kind of like a cat would. And after I snapped the photo below, he stood up on the chair and tried to make his way onto the table - which he would have done had I not foiled his attempt.
No, I do not like this new skill. Not one bit.

Kilps Visit: Part 2

Our time together was a good blend of getting out-and-about and laying low. After Bella's dance class one Friday morning, we ventured out to Main Street for some Philly pretzels and pizza.
The (five) of usUncle Tom with Graydon - so sweet. Grady-Boy found a dog to love on. From there, we headed for the park. Random photos from the week:

This was pretty much a nightly ritual. The only thing missing in this photo was a bowl of popcorn.Lunch on the porch Trips for water ice. Grandma & Grandpa took the kids out twice! This was definitely a highlight for Bella (and I assume Graydon as well).
Graydon had a doctor check-up and had to get three shots. This was the first time that he received them in his arms. Poor baby. He was quite the trooper though. I believe he stopped crying before we even walked out of the exam room. His new stats are:
Height: 32 inches (75th percentile)
Weight: 22.5 inches (25th percentile)
Head Circumference: 18 7/8 inches (50th percentile)
He's a steady boy. I believe these exact percentiles have stuck with him for quite some time now. The doctor seems very pleased with how he's doing. . . and so am I. One large portion of our visit that I failed to get any photo proof of were the competitive games of Wii sports that were going on here. Bowling was by far the most played game. And I must say, the skill level of Andy's parents greatly increased over their week here.

Maybe there will be a Wii in their future?

15 months old!

I love this age - this in-between time when I can embrace Graydon as my baby and my big-boy-in-the-making. He is very much my baby when we snuggle together and rock before sleep times. I treasure when he uses my shoulder for a pillow and drifts off to sleep. I could put him down, but I don’t. Not for a while anyway. These are moments that I will absolutely miss.

I know it.

Then there are those moments when he is very much my big boy. Like at meals, for example. He’s got molars. . . and he wants to use ’em! How did he let me know this? Simple. By throwing the cut-up pieces to the floor and then whining for the food on my plate. I watched him eat a full slice of pear and what-do-ya-know. . . he bit off little pieces and chewed them up. Yes. He is ready. We know he's finished when he starts throwing food again or he fanatically waves his arms around, signing "all done". His signing and verbal vocabulary are both growing. In addition to 'all done', he signs 'milk', 'thank you', 'baby', and 'please'. I've got to say that the 'please' one is hard to resist. As soon as his chubby fingers start circling over his chest, I pretty much give in to whatever he requests.

I'll get stronger. Eventually.

There's a mischevious side to this little man. He's at the beginning stages of discerning right from wrong. At least some times. I'll be watching him and he'll, let's say, reach for an outlet. But before actually touching it. . . He stops. Looks at me. And waits - at least for a moment. What is Mom's reaction going to be? Will it be the same as last time? Yes, Graydon - my reaction is still the same. And, no - you can't play with the outlet.Does that always stop him? Not a chance.

I suppose listening skills come later.
He's definitely got the patience of a one-year-old. And by that. . . I mean that he has none.

It's hard to wait for Mommy to hold him when she's cooking dinner over a hot stove. It really stinks when he has to wait for us to get him out of the high chair. And, it's no fun to take turns with big sister when playing with Daddy (which is what's going on in this photo).
But he's gotten so good at entertaining himself. I really think our lives all changed around here when Graydon became mobile. He was suddenly much more content. He revels is his increased independence and this whole world (or at least, house) all around him that is waiting to be discovered.

I must admit that this joy is as much mine as it is his. When crawling turned to walking and walking turned to running, my ability to photograph this kid took an all-time low. Which is why this is the only photo I have of him smiling and looking at the camera. If you could see below where the photo cuts off, you'd see that I have him pinned down while my foot tickles him.

You gotta do what you gotta do sometimes. Graydon is 15 months old now. In three months, we'll call him an official Big Brother.

Big Brother - such a "big boy" thing to be.

But I have no plans to stop calling him My Baby Boy any time soon.

My four year old. . .

. . . got her first pedicure! What a treat for her!

Mommy didn't get her first (and only. . . so far) pedicure until she was twenty-eight!

Bella giggled as the water and bubbles "tickled" her feet. And look! Magazines to read (or, in their case - look at). Just like the mommies do it.Graydon displayed oodles of enthusiasm that morning. Was I surprised that Bella picked out two shades of pink? Not at all. I have a girly girl on my hands.Graydon is clearly impressed. This experience was shared with friends, Ava and Katelyn. And the three little siblings who were more than patient.

Sometimes I get a little sentimental about Bella growing up.

But sometimes it's fun to look ahead to all of the fun mother/daughter activities in our future.
