Our Week at the Shore!

It's a week that we look forward to all year. And for good reason. It's always such an incredible week!

We loaded up and left after church on June 30th and made it all the way to eastern Pennsylvania before stopping for the night. Graydon got comfortable in the hotel room right away.

MONDAY

We pulled into Mimi Jane's driveway around 11:30am.

We didn't waste much time before heading to the beach. I forgot to take my phone with me, so I couldn't take any pictures from those first dips in the ocean. But that was not necessarily a bad thing because I didn't feel like I needed to take a picture of every little thing (because just about everything they do at the beach feels photo-worthy). I just sat there and relaxed - which was perfect. I love the rhythm of life at the shore where we don't shower until after the beach. Those evening showers always feel better than morning showers. Here is Graydon all cleaned up and comfy after spending a couple of hours in the ocean.
IMG_9980

Andy got some oysters that night. Whenever we go to the shore, he loves to eat raw seafood, since it's the only time he can get it. Me? I'll pass.
IMG_9981

The kids all gave it a try though.
IMG_9982

IMG_9984

It's in his mouth and he's trying to convince himself to swallow.
IMG_9986

IMG_9987

Curtis tried some too and somehow I missed getting a photo of it.

TUESDAY

Back to the beach!
IMG_9994

We were there for several hours and Graydon was out of the water for maybe about five minutes. He just loved playing in those waves on the boogie board. And he got really good at catching the wave at just the right time to ride it all the way to the sand. I also got in the water a little bit this day, but I think the proof of that is on Bella's phone.
IMG_9995

Curtis played in the water some, did some digging, attempted to build a sand castle, and looked for shells.
IMG_0003

Bella was probably in the water about as much as Graydon, but she also did some skim boarding.
IMG_0004

IMG_0008

IMG_0009

Curtis really wanted to get into the hot tub after coming back from the beach, so we all got in. It's a beautiful view from there.
IMG_0010

I think this is my new favorite picture of the three of them from that evening.
IMG_0014

A couple of hours after leaving the beach, we went back. Bella brought her kite and the boys brought the metal detector.
IMG_0018

IMG_0019

IMG_0021

They got some beeping! What's it going to be? The anticipation is mounting. They dug up a . . .
IMG_0022

PENNY!
IMG_0024

I discovered with metal detecting that anything feels like a treasure when you dig it up. They ended up finding this penny, three quarters, six tent stakes, and multiple bottle caps.

Ocean wind is perfect for flying a kite.
IMG_0025

IMG_0026

Eventually, Bella joined in the metal detecting.
IMG_0029

IMG_0031

IMG_0034

They didn't go with the intention of getting wet, but the water seems to have a way of drawing them in.
IMG_0039

A new favorite of Curtis!
IMG_0044

WEDNESDAY

Mornings at the shore are my favorite. Slow start to the day. Hot coffee. Sitting in pajamas until changing for the beach. It's perfect.

This photo of Curtis is special. He started to experience more worry and anxiety surrounding school this year and one of the coping skills we talked through is imagining a peaceful place that he can travel to in his mind that will help him to feel calm and less worried. The place that Curtis picked is exactly this spot: Mimi Jane's couch at the shore. When we were talking about it, he described the couch, the window, and the things outside the window. His peaceful place wasn't the beach or ocean, it was Mimi Jane's couch, a very special place that he's been to many times in his mind.
IMG_0046

My friend, Jen, and two of her kids came out to spend the day with us. Back to the beach!
IMG_0047

I spent that whole time talking with Jen and catching up on everything that that was my only beach photo that day. Afterwards, we went back to Mimi's house.
IMG_0055

We played a lot of card games this week. All of the kids recently learned how to shuffle, a skill they had fun practicing - which meant that a deck of cards was always nearby.
IMG_0053

IMG_0052

We fit in a little bit of shopping that evening.
IMG_0051

The end of the day always has a way of sneaking up on us. I'm thankful that we're able to get this time to see each other every year.
IMG_0049

THURSDAY: The Fourth of July

We changed things up this day. Instead of going to the beach right away, we went up to the north point of the island to see the lighthouse in Barnegat, "Old Barney." This is the area of the island where the bay meets the ocean.
IMG_0058

IMG_0059

We visited this same place back in 2015. We came in early June that year, so the weather was a little cooler. We thought it would be fun to recreate a couple of photos from that year.

2019. They've all grown just a little bit since then. Bella was sure to shut her eyes and stick out her foot again.

IMG_0062

This time around, we climbed inside the lighthouse - all 217 steps of it. I would have been find with taking a break or two on the way up; but Bella was the leader and she just kept going.
IMG_0067

View from the top! The bay is on the right and the ocean is on the left.

IMG_0076

Afterwards, we did a little bit of shopping.
IMG_0077

You never know what you might find.
IMG_0078

Our beach time began in the later afternoon that day. I just went down in my clothes and listened to an audiobook while Andy and the kids played in the water.
IMG_0079

IMG_0081

I tried to get a photo of the four of them but wave after wave kept crashing into them before I could get a good one.
IMG_0088

IMG_0090

There we go!
IMG_0092

That night was our seafood dinner. The boys had crab legs. I got a crab cake and split some flounder with Bella. I can't remember what Andy and Jane got. Everyone enjoyed their food.
IMG_0096

Then we went next door to the roof of Jane's neighbor to watch the fireworks. We could literally turn in any direction and see them being launched from somewhere. There were probably at least ten different spots to look at. We were turning in circles to try and catch them all!
IMG_0097

IMG_0108

All decked out in their holiday best.
IMG_0110

FRIDAY

We went mini-golfing in the morning. I won this year! It was my first time!
IMG_0127

We met with the Conyers' for lunch at the Holiday Snack Bar. Andy needs to visit this place each year. The lunch was great and the company even better - I just didn't take any pictures during that time.

When we got back that afternoon, we took some family pictures.

IMG_0144

Jane always sends Andy and I off for a special and watches the kids for us so that the two of us can spend some time together. This was the first year that we were here through July 4th and we've never seen such crowds. It took us about 30 minutes just to find a parking spot. Earlier in the week, Andy got his raw oysters, so on this night, our last night, he wanted to be sure to get his raw clams.

SATURDAY

The saddest day of the summer - leaving Mimi Jane. We never like that part. We left around 11am and made our way to Cinnaminson to visit with some more friends.

Curtis was thoughtful enough to take a picture of everyone. He just randomly grabbed my phone and told everyone to look at the camera.
IMG_0150

Then he realized that he wasn't in the photo, so he had Graydon take a picture of him.
IMG_0153

These girls are growing up so much. Brooke (on the left) is entering her senior year of college and Maddie (the middle) is beginning her freshman year. They are both pursuing nursing. We loved seeing each of them again!
IMG_0155

We went on from there to visit another pastor that Andy was really close with and then stopped by Rita's for a water ice treat. They don't sell this stuff out by us and it was a fun walk down memory lane.
IMG_0159

Curtis's mouth was just a little blue after his blue raspberry water ice.
IMG_0160

And our last stop of the night was to see the Krott family. It works out so well that each of the kids have a friend to play with - which makes it easier for Andy and I to hang out with Jen and Karl.

IMG_0177

We stayed with them that night and by 9:45am on Sunday morning, we left their house and started making our trek to Indiana. But first, we stopped at a gas station near our old church. We were still there at 10am, right when church was getting started. We heard the bells and knew that BJ was the one ringing them. It felt a little weird to be in the gas station parking lot instead of in the church, but also felt kind of neat to be there and hear the bells.

A few hours into the trip and Bella is passed out.
IMG_0186

I think we made it home around 8:30pm that evening.

It was a week filled with many happy moments that are already wonderful memories.

Curtis's Birthday!

Curtis began his ninth birthday with a strawberry banana smoothie and banana chocolate muffins.
IMG_9765

The kids get birthday parties every other year, so technically, this was Curtis's year for a party. I asked him several times what he wanted to do for a party and he couldn't decide. Finally, he told me that he just wanted to have a family day. {heart}

Wendy's is a longtime favorite of his, so we grabbed some lunch and took it to a park.
IMG_9768

IMG_4174

After playing for a while and letting our food settle, we moved on to our next stop: Starbucks! He definitely wanted this to be a part of his day.
IMG_9769

We each got something.
IMG_9772

IMG_9774

Somehow the kids got a hold of my phone while we were heading back home. They must know by now that if they take pictures of themselves with my phone, there is the possibility that it will end up on here! Truthfully though, finding random pics of my kids on my phone is one of my favorite surprises. And sometimes I end up with gems like these. . .

IMG_9792

We spent about two hours at the pool that afternoon. That day was the best pool day of the summer so far. Sunny, hot, and not a cloud in the sky. Even I was in the pool the entire time. It was wonderful.
IMG_9909

Hope had its Old-Fashioned Fourth of July celebration that evening on the town square. The boys had a little watermelon eating competition. (We just missed the seed spitting contest.)
IMG_9912

IMG_9914

They gave a good try at the stilts.
IMG_9915

Free rock candy.
IMG_9916

After running around and playing with friends, it was time to settle in for the fireworks. Not everyone gets fireworks on their birthday!

IMG_9926

IMG_9955

By the time we got home from the fireworks, it was after 10:30pm! And we still needed to do cake and presents! It was definitely a late night in the Kilps house that night.

IMG_9964

He was so excited to open up this new shift from Auntie Lori. As you can see from what he's wearing, he has a certain style of shirt that he really likes. This was also the year of money. He's been saving up for a Nintendo Switch and was able to buy one with his birthday money!
IMG_9967

I loved this day and I love this boy. Happy Birthday one more time, Curtis!

Summer Fun!

When life gives you limes (and we were given a lot), first you give some away. . .
IMG_9725

. . . and then you make some lime-ade!
IMG_9726

IMG_9727

So refreshing on these hot summer days.
IMG_9767

One of my summer bucket list items is always to go berry picking. There's a garden up the road that grows black raspberries, so that's usually what we pick.
IMG_9737

IMG_9738

IMG_9741

Happy pickers!
IMG_9740

Bella was very particular about the berries she picked. They needed to be "just right." And I must admit, she did pick some really good ones.
IMG_9742

IMG_9743

Another good summertime snack!
IMG_9744

Salty cat found a baby bird. I initially thought it was a goner. The poor thing was just learning to fly and couldn't get much air time before falling to the ground, only to get picked up by Salty. I'm amazed this little guy (or gal) survived.  Andy brought it in and we inspected it. One wing looked badly damaged. It seemed pretty stunned at first and its eyes were closed. After being safe in a shoebox for a while, it seemed to do better. Fortunately, we have a wildlife rehabilitation center right in Hope, so I was able to take the bird there. It chirped all the way there, which made me feel like  it was going to be ok. The woman at the rehab center said that she would splint the wing to promote healing, but wasn't certain it was going to heal completely. Either way, I'm glad that we were able to rescue the bird from Salty!
IMG_9746

Bella's school assignment for the summer was to do some random acts of kindness and then write a paper about the whole experience. One afternoon, we went around town completing her missions. Her first one was to add a bag of microwave popcorn on the Redbox machine. She also put quarters in the carts at Aldi, put a couple of dollars in the check-out line at Target near the treats, wrote a note of encouragement and hid it in the women's clothing area at Target, and dropped some coins on the ground at the park. I feel like I'm missing some and I know she has a few more planned. She commented to me that evening about how good she felt. I guess that saying is true, "You can't spread a little sunshine without getting some on yourself." :)
IMG_9751

The boys played their last baseball game of the season. Their team was league champs as well as tournament champs!
IMG_9760

All season long, Graydon has worn a different shirt than his team. Initially, he didn't plan to play baseball this season, but eventually changed his mind. The league was still accepting registrations at the time, they just couldn't guarantee that he'd get a shirt. He didn't. But he didn't mind. And I think he's really glad that he decided to play after all!
IMG_9762

It was such a hot day, so we decided to reward the boys with a night swim. They had a couple of buddies from their team come with.  There's nothing like jumping in a pool after playing a sweaty game of baseball!
IMG_9763

Some mosquito had a full feast on Graydon's stomach.
IMG_9972

Bella harvested some of her lettuce. I love that she has taken over the garden this year!
